Officers said they have seen an increase in the number of devices being stolen in Chesterfield and also in Buxton, Bolsover, Swadlincote, Erewash and Derby east and west areas in recent months.
Catalytic converters, which are a device on vehicle exhausts that reduces the toxic gases and pollutants, are being stolen because they are made of precious metals.

Hide AdDerbyshire Constabulary are encouraging motorists to park in a garage or in a position where it would be difficult to access the underside of the vehicle, near the exhaust to prevent further thefts.
Drivers are also advised to consider marking the catalytic converter with a serial number to identify it, and register it on sites such as Immobilise, in case it is stolen.
Protective coverings are available to fit over the converter – which may not prevent it from being taken but would make it more difficult to remove.
Officers have been told to install alarms and CCTV if possible where their car is parked and to leave their vehicle next to good quality lighting to improve natural surveillance and act as a deterrent.
