Investigation concluded into fatal blaze that led to tragic deaths of mother and son in Chesterfield

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at a property on Staunton Close at 2.44am on Sunday, April 7.

Tragically, a 65-year-old woman, and a 31-year-old man were declared deceased at the scene. They have been named as Sarita Garcia-Perez and her son Sancho Garcia-Bolsover.

One further occupant had escaped the property when fire crews arrived at the scene.

A joint investigation into the cause of the blaze has determined that the fire was accidental, with the most likely cause being a naked flame igniting combustible materials.

Group Manager Nathan Stevens, from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS), said: “Once again I would like to extend the thoughts and sympathy of everyone at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to the family and friends of the deceased at this distressing time.”

DFRS would like to remind residents of the following safety advice:

Ensure you have smoke alarms fitted on every level of your property.

Test your smoke alarms weekly to ensure they are ready to give you and your family vital early warning of a fire, should a fire break out in your home.

Make sure you have a pre-planned and practiced escape route that everyone in the household is aware of.

Have a bedtime routine – check escape routes are clear and close all doors, switch off electrical items where possible, ensure candles and cigarettes are out, and ensure you know where your keys and phone are.
